Two sides looking to rebuild after seasons of differing fortunes could end up doing plenty of business over the course of the summer months.
Manchester City, who have made a limp defence of their Premier League title, are set to send a number of their squad through the exit door, while Liverpool look to make additions after flirting, but failing, with top-four qualification.
After a goalless draw with West Brom in their last outing, Reds boss Brendan Rodgers admitted he’ll be looking to add another striker to his roster in the close season.
“We will look at it in the summer and it’s somewhere we will have to do some work on,” said Rodgers, before adding “we just don’t score as many goals, it’s as simple as that.”
With a new front man clearly high on the Northern Irishman’s agenda, reports indicate City’s Stevan Jovetic, one of many Citizens thought to be moved on this summer, is chief among his targets.
Jovetic has endured a torrid time with injury since arriving from Roma in 2013 and the City decision-makers seem to have grown tired of waiting for him to regain full fitness.
When he has played, the Montenegrin has shown an eye for goal and Rodgers will hope he can get him on to the pitch often enough to show those talents should he land his man.
It’s not just the oft-injured striker that Rodgers wants though, with reports suggesting soon-to-be free-agent James Milner is also on the Reds’ wishlist.
Milner looks certain to depart the Etihad in the sunnier months, as an extension on his current deal continues to elude him.
The England midfielder will surely gain more game time at Anfield than he is currently afforded with the Sky Blues, with a possible role in central midfield an option after Steven Gerrard’s departure.
