Liverpool’s continuing quest to replace Luis Suarez with X number of players is now focused on a deal to bring Paris St-Germain forward Ezequiel Lavezzi to Anfield for a reported fee of £18m.
This possible transfer is sure to excite many Reds fans who are crying out for a frontman whose profile can go some way to filling the gaping hole left by serial gnawer and club top scorer Suarez.
Having helped place Napoli back among Europe’s elite, the lively Argentinean international forward secured a transfer to project-PSG in the summer of 2012.
And despite regularly featuring for the French champions over the past two seasons, vying for a starting place in a glittering line-up containing Zlatan Ibrahimovic and latterly Edinson Cavani, has somewhat diluted the star status he forged in Serie A.
Lavezzi operates primarily as a wide-left forward and has plentiful attributes for Brendan Rodgers to admire not least pace, skill and tenacity reminiscent of the departed Suarez, but a rather humble strike rate is the one blot in his copy book.
Since heading to European football from his native Argentina, Lavezzi has averagely bagged around one goal every four games.
His keenest admirers would point to the fact that his industry and all-round contribution to the team placate his modest strike rate though.
The PSG man has the kind of stocky structure, low-centre of gravity and strength on the ball that Liverpool will clearly miss after letting the almost impossible-to-outmuscle Suarez go.
However, Liverpool fans will be counting on at least double figures from any new arrivals in the forward line and for all his exertions that’s what Lavezzi will ultimately be judged on.
The last thing the Merseyside club needs in their 12/1-rated bid for that elusive title is another Dirk Kuyt on their books.
