A number of changes could still be made at Liverpool before the end of the transfer window as manager Roy Hodgson looks to assemble a squad capable of competing for a Champions League place this season.
Hodgson’s side produced a lacklustre performance in their last Premier League outing, losing 3-0 at Manchester City, and they only have one point from the opening two games.
This has left them at 20/1 to win the Premier League for the first time and 13/8 to finish in the top four, but Hodgson has not finished in searching for some last-minute new additions to his squad.
Many potential transfers hinge on whether Javier Mascherano completes a move to Barcelona, with the midfielder ruling himself out of the game against Manchester City.
Hodgson is said to want £18m in cash for the Argentine, but the Spanish champions are attempting to seal a deal for a lesser amount that would also see Alexander Hleb and Martin Caceres move to Anfield.
Meanwhile, the former Fulham boss has returned to his former club in order to solve his lack of options at left-back by signing Paul Konchesky.
Hodgson is reportedly close to completing a £3.5m deal and the 29-year-old would also be able to help in Liverpool’s Europa League campaign, for which they are 9/1 to win the tournament.
Furthermore, Hodgson is said to be keen to boost his attack and Carlton Cole has emerged as a target to compete for places with Fernando Torres and David N’Gog.
Liverpool are said to be offering an initial £6m up front and the same again in add-ons depending on achievements and appearances.
Cole has yet to score for current club West Ham so far in two games and is 100/1 to finish as the Premier League’s top scorer this season, something which may be more likely should he move to Anfield.
Liverpool’s next league game is at home to West Brom and they are 2/9 to pick up their first three points. See the whole Liverpool vs West Brom betting market.
