Jose Mourinho’s best quotes from pre-season so far

Did you know Jose Mourinho isn’t happy with Manchester United’s pre-season preparations this summer? He may have mentioned it once or twice.

He’s been on the warpath during the club’s tour of the USA. His targets have ranged from the club’s hierarchy to the captain to the referee of the friendly against Liverpool.

Is this the latest case of Third Season Syndrome for Mourinho? That’s when it started to go wrong for him at Chelsea (twice) and Real Madrid in the past. It’s now just 6/5 that he’s no longer in charge by the end of the season.

We’ve taken a look at some of his most eye-catching quotes from the last few weeks:

When asked how pre-season was going, he didn’t beat around the bush…

“The pre-season is very bad. The positive thing is only for the young boys that have a fantastic opportunity to train with us.”

He didn’t speak so highly of those same young boys a few days later…

“Do you want him [Alexis Sanchez] to be very happy with the players he has around him?

“We are not playing here to improve the team or our dynamic or routines. We are playing here just to try to survive and to have some not-very-ugly results.”

It’s not only the youngsters who’ve come under fire. Club captain Antonio Valencia has felt his wrath too…

“Antonio Valencia comes from holiday – I think too much holiday for him. His condition was not good when he was back, then injury and also go back.”

And the former Chelsea boss wasn’t in the mood to show his caring side when Anthony Martial returned to England for the birth of his child…

“Anthony Martial has the baby and after the baby is born – beautiful baby, full of health, thank God – he should be here and he is not here.”

Paul Pogba hasn’t even joined the squad yet after helping France to win the World Cup. That didn’t stop his manager from inferring that he isn’t always fully committed in a United shirt…

“I don’t think it’s about us getting the best out of him, it’s about him giving the best he has to give.”

United’s only signings so far this summer have been Fred, Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant. Mourinho wants more, but he’s not convinced the people above him will get the deals done…

“One thing is what I want and another thing is what is going to happen”

With United set to kick off their Premier League campaign against Leicester City next Friday, there’s still time for Jose to let off more steam.
