Despite making 34 appearances for Manchester United so far this season, Michael Carrick looks set to exit Old Trafford in the summer.
Metro are reporting that United have not offered Carrick, who is out of contract in the summer, an extension on his current deal.
After almost a decade at Old Trafford, and a haul of five Premier League titles, a Champions League medal and two League Cup triumphs, the cultured midfielder is believed to be seeking a new challenge.
Everton are the most likely suitors at 7/4 to be Carrick’s next club, with Roberto Martinez believed to be a huge admirer of the England international.
Newcastle United are second-best at 11/4, and the club’s North-East location may be a pull for Wallsend-born Carrick. However, the fate of Newcastle in their bid to escape relegation from the Premier League could prove a dealbreaker when it comes to bidding for a player of Carrick’s stature.
There is also a chance of the 34-year-old returning to a former team. Carrick spent seven years at Upton Park, making 159 appearances for the Hammers, and a return to the east London club is 7/2. Securing Champions League football is still a real possibility for the side, so this could prove a very popular selection.
Tottenham – where Carrick spent two seasons – is another move which would come as no great surprise, especially as Mauricio Pochettino may look to add experience to a young squad ahead of next season’s likely Champions League campaign.
However, the lure of joining up with former teammates may prove too much to resist. Jonny Evans and Darren Fletcher have both left Manchester United for West Bromwich Albion since the start of 2015 and Carrick is 8/1 to join the Baggies.
One thing is for sure – Carrick looks extremely likely to be heading out of the Old Trafford door this summer, and there is no shortage of clubs who would love to add the United star to their ranks.
