Arsene Wenger may have promised to be “very active” in the summer transfer window, but the Arsenal manager also needs to keep hold of his current squad if his side are to challenge for the title next season.
Arsenal are the outsiders of this season’s top four clubs to win the title next season at 7/1, and Wenger has seen his side overtaken by Manchester City (9/2) in the 2011/12 Premier League winners betting.
Gael Clichy is the latest Arsenal star to want to leave the Emirates and the full-back wants to follow Denilson and Nicklas Bentdner out the exit and has put in a transfer request.
Inter Milan are reportedly lining up a £5.5m bid for the Arsenal full-back who apparently would rather a move abroad than to another English team, although the Italian giants may face competition from Bayern Munich.
Inter have made their interest to Arsenal clear and have held informal talks with Clichy, but the loss of his left-back would mean Wenger searching for yet another defender in Arsenal’s problem area.
Despite the fact this Arsenal squad has fallen short in the title race, Wenger needs to improve his squad instead of replacing players and while the likes of Clichy, Denilson and Bentdner have come in for some stick this season, they are important squad players.
Gary Cahill and Chris Samba have been touted as potential Arsenal signings and Keiran Gibbs would take Clichy’s absent left-back position, but Wenger would still need cover for the England youngster.
It remains to be seen just how active Wenger is over the summer but one thing’s for sure, Arsenal have to tighten up their defence if they are to challenge at the top of the Premier League.
