Reports from Italy have stated that it will cost Liverpool £16m if they want to sign Gaston Ramirez from Bologna and an offer in the coming days should give them a substantial edge over Inter Milan.
The agent of Ramirez has already indicated that talks have been conducted with a Premier League club, with Tottenham also previously linked with the attacker, who has been representing Uruguay at the Olympics.
However, it is Liverpool that are believed to have been more interested and the fact that they have Luis Suarez and Sebastian Coates already on their books would give them an advantage to securing his signature.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Bologna have named their price and the onus is now on interested parties to match it.
Given that they will owe 30 per cent of any such fee to Ramirez’ former club Penarol, it is unlikely that they will be willing to negotiate.
Much will depend on how discussions materialise for Fulham’s Clint Dempsey, who continues to be linked with a switch to Anfield and it is anticipated that Brendan Rodgers will only be allowed to sign one.
The big rivals are Inter, but the consensus is that the Italians will need to get some players off their books before they are able to make any signings, particularly a signing of this type of transfer fee.
Juventus have Giampaolo Pazzini on their radar, but he is a back-up target if the Serie A champions are unable to lure Robin Van Persie, while little progress has been made in finding a new club for Brazilian full-back Maicon.
Therefore, an offer in the coming days should result in Liverpool gaining an edge at a time when Inter are unable to respond.
Liverpool are 19/10 in the Premier League odds to finish in the top four this season and if they sign Ramirez and he can repeat the form displayed for Bologna in the last campaign, this would look a decent price.
