Hughes keen on landing Black Cats ace on deadline day

Stoke manager Mark Hughes is intent on securing a transfer deadline day deal that would see Lee Cattermole switch the Stadium of Light for the Britannia.

Cattermole is deemed surplus to requirements by Sunderland boss Gus Poyet and with the former Brighton manager sealing a £2.75m deal to be reunited with Liam Bridcutt a move for the 25-year-old could well be completed before tonight’s 11pm deadline.

The Black Cats could recoup that figure and then some with former Manchester City, Fulham and QPR boss Hughes reportedly willing to part with £4m to land his man.

Sunderland had been holding out for a figure closer to £5m but with Bridcutt making the move from the Amex Stadium to the north-east there is a belief that a deal can be struck.

Stoke have won just one of their last eight games in all competitions and currently sit just three points above the relegation zone and with the Potters shipping 18 goals in that time the defensive cover that Cattermole would bring could prove priceless.

Hughes’ men are priced at 9/2 to beat a resurgent Manchester United this weekend and end a run of three successive 1-0 losses.

Cattermole’s arrival may not be enough to steer the Potters to victory over the champions, with Juan Mata, Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie set to start together for the first time and the visitors priced at 4/7 to pick up all three points.

However, the arrival of the former Middlesbrough and Wigan man would certainly boost the Britannia Stadium outfit’s hopes of securing Premier League survival – something currently priced at 1/6.
