Holloway a Swansea option to replace Liverpool-bound Rodgers
Published:Alan Curbishley and Gus Poyet may be the 6/1 joint favourites to replace Brendan Rodgers at Swansea, but Ian Holloway may be the smarter appointment at 8/1.
Rodgers has left Wales for Liverpool, where he has reportedly signed a three-year deal to attempt to rekindle former glories at Anfield.
It is a bold appointment by Liverpool for a manager with only four years experience and just one in the Premier League.
Swansea’s hierarchy have been impressive at identifying managerial talent in the past and were especially shrewd to appoint Rodgers when Roberto Martinez left for a bigger club when moving to Wigan in the Premier League.
As young managers with potential bright futures have often topped the shortlist, it is hard to believe that the board would opt for Curbishley.
Poyet is more plausible given that he has been targeted before back in 2010, especially given that Swansea are expected to receive somewhere in the region of £5m in compensation for Rodgers.
But Poyet may find it hard to leave Brighton even if it is for a first crack at Premier League management.
Poyet enjoys an ideal relationship with a wealthy owner at Brighton, only signed a five-year contract earlier this season and is heavily involved in lots of the smaller sections that make up the club.
Therefore, Holloway may be turned to and there is every possibility that he would be willing to leave Blackpool after failing to lead them back to the Premier League at the first attempt when losing the Championship play-off final to West Ham.
Holloway has also been positive towards Swansea’s style of football in the past and may jump at the opportunity not only to test himself again in the Premier League, but build on what Rodgers has started at the club.
