Manchester United’s pursuit of top class midfield talent has been given a boost after long-time target Ilkay Gundogan revealed a desire to play in the Premier League.

The Borussia Dortmund star has long been admired by the Red Devils but talk of a move to Old Trafford cooled after the 24-year-old sustained a back injury that limited him to just three appearances for BVB last term.

Now, however, the midfielder is back to full fitness and once again attracting admiring glances from some of Europe’s bigger clubs.

With Dortmund currently languishing in the relegation places of the Bundesliga, and influential manager Jurgen Klopp rumoured to be heading toward the exit door at the Westfalenstadion, Gundogan has issued a thinly-veiled come-and-get-me plea to potential suitors.

Revealing that he was the subject of a speculative bid from La Liga giants Real Madrid last year, Gundogan said:”At the time I had two more seasons on my contract. But also, my injury wrecked everything. I couldn’t play for 14 months.

“Now I want to look forward and make up for lost time with sporting success. Playing outside Germany is one of my big goals. If one day I leave here, I’d like to play in Spain or for one of the big teams in England.”

With Real having subsequently added James Rodriguez and Toni Kroos to their midfield options United could jump to the head of the queue for the German’s services.

United have added to their midfield numbers of late too, with Juan Mata, Ander Herrera and Daley Blind all fairly recent arrivals.

However, the Spanish duo have both been linked with moves away already and it seems Louis van Gaal is happy to cut his experiments short if it helps return United to the forefront of English football sooner rather than later.

United take on Hull at the weekend hoping to build on their first away victory of the season and the Red Devils can be backed at 2/7 to claim all three points.
