Good old fashioned wing-play to keep Swansea in top half

Calum Chambers’ budding Arsenal career was going swimmingly it seemed, until the former Southampton teenager ran into a certain winger at the Liberty Stadium.

Bought off the back of an impressive showing in the World Cup, Jefferson Montero will be appearing in the young defender’s nightmares for a little while to come.

Like many a chicken, lamb or pig that day, Chambers experienced a full Sunday roasting with all the trimmings thanks to the man he was tasked with marking.

Unlike so many other players who have promised much but delivered little off the back of a few sparkling displays at a major tournament, this fella seems to have it all in his locker.

Most refreshingly, in the age of the 4-3-3 and the 4-2-3-1, where every attacking player going is now labelled a ‘wide-forward’, Montero is a hark back to the fabled touchline-huggers of old.

Mixing trickery with lightening pace, the Ecuadorian constantly drew Chambers into his trap before a flick or a turn saw him scurrying away from his marker with white paint on his heels.

All this flashy stuff is no good without end product though. Luckily for Swansea and their fans that doesn’t appear to be an issue for Montero either.

His most telling contribution after selling Chambers a dummy for the umpteenth time in the match to create a little bit of space was to swing an inviting ball onto the head of grateful substitute Bafetimbi Gomis to score the winner.

After the match, Montero himself came out to declare that the best of him was yet to come, a scary though indeed.

Already fifth in the Premier League table, armed with Montero supplying the ammo a top-half finish at odds of 4/6 is looking every bit a punt to take a slice of.
