Former Real Madrid man could solve West Ham’s defensive problems
As free agents go, you don’t get much better than a two-time Champions League winner, two-time European Championship and one-time World Cup winner who has represented Spanish giants Real Madrid on over 150 occasions.
But Alvaro Arbeloa could be set for a sensational return to the Premier League after seven years away, with West Ham reportedly keen on bringing the versatile defender to the London Stadium in a surprise Deadline Day move.
The Hammers were keen on Arsenal defender Calum Chambers as boss Slaven Bilic looks to add depth to his back line, but the 21-year-old opted for a season-long loan to Middlesbrough, but with Arbeloa a huge 1/16 to join up with the Croatian boss, it seems he’s found his alternative.
And with the Spaniard available on a free, it means Bilic can continue to look in the market for more deals, knowing he would only have to cover the Spaniard’s wages.
Arbeloa is no stranger to English football, having represented Liverpool on no less than 66 occasions in the league, and his ability to play on either flank means Bilic could give his current full-backs some much needed rest throughout the season.
The only stumbling block with this deal is the lack of European football in East London, but as things stand it doesn’t seem like the Hammers face much competition for Arbeloa’s signature.
