Going from the one shining light of the ill-fated David Moyes era, to the forgotten child of Old Trafford once Angel Di Maria arrived seems like an obvious slip for Adnan Januzaj, with hindsight. But that doesn’t detract from the fact that the Belgian is in desperate need to restart his career.
The winger has only started eight games under Louis van Gaal this season, as the likes of Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia have surged past him in the club’s pecking order out wide.
To avoid stagnating completely, it looks like the 20-year-old will be farmed out on loan next season in order to get him some much-needed game time, with Everton reportedly the destination.
Roberto Martinez is, by all accounts, ready to sign off on a season-long temporary stay for Januzaj at Goodison Park and there really cannot be anywhere better for the former Anderlecht kid to rebuild his reputation.
The Toffees, particularly under Martinez, have been the first port of call for established Premier League stars looking to remind everyone what they can do.
Aaron Lennon, borrowed from Spurs, is the latest to benefit from a short-term stay on Merseyside, while Gareth Barry and Romelu Lukaku both secured permanent moves to the club after initial loan spells under the former Wigan boss last term.
Even before Martinez’s tenure, Moyes made good use of the loan system, bringing in the likes of Steven Pienaar, Jo and Philippe Senderos from the fringes of other top-flight teams to shine at Goodison Park.
With Kevin Mirallas rumoured to be on the way out of Everton, Januzaj could become the latest loanee to make the move for good should he impress, while convincing Van Gaal he is worth keeping through his performances isn’t out of the question either.
The Toffees take on Aston Villa in the Premier League next, a game which they are rated at 13/8 to win.
