Sunderland’s flamboyant manager Paulo Di Canio saw his odds cut from 6/1 to 9/2 second favourite to win the sack race in this year’s Premier League campaign, and is still left searching for his side’s first league win of the season.

On a day where Premier League goals came at a premium, Ian Holloway’s Crystal Palace side were determined not to let the lack of goals scored in the preceding fixtures of the day deter them. The Eagles’ resounding 3-1 win sealed their first Premier League win since defeating Liverpool back in April 2005.

One positive in a game of very few opportunities which Di Canio can take from this latest defeat is the impact of substitute Steven Fletcher. The Scotland striker recorded his first strike of the season in his maiden game under the Italian manager, meaning the striker has now scored in his first appearance of the season in each of the last four campaigns.

The Black Cats’ regional rivals Newcastle can thank Hatem Ben Arfa’s 86th minute strike for all three points in a game where defences were on top for large parts. Despite this positive result for the Toon, manager Alan Pardew still remains under pressure and can be found  leading the race for the boot. At just 11/4 to be the first manager to be sacked, the bizarre goings on at the club surely mean that this price is a tad on the short side.

At the other end of the table, Manchester City left it until the second half to seal their 2-0 victory against Hull City, thanks to goals from Alvao Negredo and Yaya Toure with a stunning free kick. In the process of seeing off their lower placed opponents, the men from Eastlands saw their odds of winning a second Barclays Premier League title move to 2/1 second favourites, albeit, City will have to wait for the outcome of the weekend’s Premier League clashes to see if their odds remain as short as they currently are.
