Raul Meireles may have been the PFA player of the year last season, but the reason he is not being offered a new contract may be because Kenny Dalglish is building a British dynasty at Anfield.
Charlie Adam is expected to complete a move from Blackpool to Liverpool today and will join Jordan Henderson at the heart of the Liverpool midfield, but Dalglish will not stop at Adam as Stuart Downing looks almost certain to leave Aston Villa for Liverpool.
It looks as if Blackpool will take the £8m and Jonjo Shelvey on a season-long loan for Adam, and while the Liverpool youngster will be disappointed to find himself further down the pecking order following the new arrivals, he should improve for a full season in the Championship.
Stuart Downing is determined to follow Ashley Young out of Villa Park and it is believed that the England winger’s move to Liverpool is nearing completion, although it won’t be done before the Adam deal.
Raul Meireles can count himself rather unlucky not to have earned an extension to his contract following an impressive first season in English football, but it seems Dalglish is keen on making his mark at Liverpool and the Spaniard looks certain to be sacrificed.
He could be a number of foreign players leaving Anfield this summer, with Lucas the only foreign midfielder certain of being at Liverpool next season.
Maxi Rodriguez has stated a desire to return to Argentina, Alberto Aquilani has never wanted to be a Liverpool player and will leave as soon as somebody makes a decent offer and the same can be said of Christian Poulsen.
Nabil El Zhar is still learning and is likely to be a Liverpool player next season, but Dalglish is preparing to assemble a British squad and should Downing follow Adam to Anfield, the Reds will boast nine British midfielders in the squad that is 10/1 to win the title next season.
