Countdown Boosts: Top Ten the target for Walter Mazzarri’s Watford

Published:

We’re less than two weeks away from the start of the new Premier League season, and our Countdown Boosts are coming thick and fast with today’s focus being on Watford.

Many thought the Hornets’ tenure in the Premier League would be somewhat short-lived this time last year, but former boss Quique Sanchez Flores built a squad which spent the majority of the season in and around tenth place in the table.

However, his surprise departure in May brought an air of uncertainty to Vicarage Road as Watford announced that he would be replaced by former Inter Milan manager Walter Mazzarri.

And Mazzarri’s appointment makes our Watford specials below all the more exciting as the Hertfordshire outfit prepare to enter the unknown under the Italian…

08:00-12:00: Watford to be relegated was 11/5, NOW 14/5

Mazzarri has yet to experience life as a manager at any club outside of Italy, and the Premier League is perhaps one of the toughest, most unforgiving divisions in world football. His inexperience in England makes the 14/5 on Watford to go down very tempting.

12:00-15:00: Watford to concede the most goals was 7/1, NOW 10/1

In their opening three games of the new campaign, Watford face a trip to Southampton and play host to both Chelsea and Arsenal, and all of those sides are capable of running riot in the goalscoring department. Mazzarri will be relying on the likes of Craig Cathcart and Sebastian Prodl to get off to a good start, otherwise the Hornets could face a long and gruelling season.

15:00-18:00: Watford to finish in the Top 10 was 8/1, NOW 10/1

A quick look at Watford’s running league position in graph form last campaign will tell you they occupied a top ten spot 15 times throughout the course of the season, and rarely went below 13th in the league. If Mazzarri is to pick up where Flores left off , a top-half finish at 10/1 looks like great value.

18:00-22:00: Troy Deeney to score 12 or more Premier League goals was 5/2, NOW 4/1

Last season Deeney was one half of one of the deadliest strike duos in the league, scoring 13 and assisting seven, and rejecting a reported bid of £25m from Leicester City for the 28-year-old striker tells you just how important he is to Mazzarri’s plans.
