Chelsea’s known interest in Robert Lewandowski has been relatively small-scale for much of the summer to date, but there are growing vibes hinting that the Borussia Dortmund striker could end up at Stamford Bridge by September 1st.
Previously it has seemed a straight shoot-out between Bayern Munich and Manchester United for Lewandowski if Dortmund did allow him to leave with a year remaining on his contract.
However, Chelsea have emerged as viable contenders with Jose Mourinho reportedly keen to bring in two new strikers and the fact that PSG’s offer for Edinson Cavani eclipses what the Blues are willing to pay.
It is 8/1 that Chelsea sign Lewandowski before the closing of the summer transfer window and the consensus is that it is the Pole and Wayne Rooney that now top the shortlist.
And alongside costing less than half as much as Cavani, there are other benefits for Chelsea in signing Lewandowski.
Firstly, he is two years younger which means that he has a longer shelf life, while he is more proven at Champions League level.
But the most compelling arguments come in their respective statistics from last season, where Lewandowski not only had the far greater shot accuracy in terms of finding the target, but also enjoyed a better conversion rate.
Furthermore, Lewandowski proved to be the more lethal on his weaker foot.
Chelsea have been mentioned in the same breath as many strikers this summer and those believing that Lewandowski is not heading to Stamford Bridge may want to back some someone else instead.
The aforementioned Cavani is considered the most likely to sign for Chelsea by September 1st based on the betting, as he is 4/7 to arrive from Napoli.
Manchester City’s Edin Dzeko is 2/1, Rooney can be backed at 3/1 and Zlatan Ibrahimovic is the obvious outsider at 16/1.
