Chelsea sign Torres as Ancelotti enters last chance saloon

Transfer fee records were broken up and down the country as Chelsea and Liverpool raided the piggy banks in a bid to improve their seasons.

No doubt about it, Chelsea have played their trump card in landing Fernando Torres, and the Spaniard is 14/1 to fire Chelsea to Premier League success in the second half of the season.

Chelsea have been cut into 7/1 to win the Premier League now that World Cup winner Torres has arrived, and following his British record £50m transfer, it’s 14/1 that Chelsea win the league and Torres scores over 6.5 goals in the process.

However it does mean that Carlo Ancelotti is now a man under immense pressure after Chelsea chairman Roman Abramovich pulled out the cheque book, and if Chelsea don’t play their way back into the title race quickly Ancelotti is likely to be shown the exit.

But while Torres was the singing of the January transfer window, Liverpool, and namely Andy Carroll, have become the talk of the footballing fraternity.

Having received £50m for Torres, Kenny Dalglish and company decided to splash out on a couple of new strikers and secured the signings of Luis Suarez from Ajax for £23m, and Andy Carroll for a quite frankly ludicrous sum of £35m.

It makes Carroll the most expensive British player ever and the 22-year-old now has the weight of the Kop on his shoulders in what could be the breaking of his career.

Carroll is 5/6 to score over 5.5 goals for Liverpool by the end of the season, whereas Suarez is 19/10 to outscore Torres between now and the end of the season.

Torres cut a forlorn figure at Anfield and should his move to Stamford Bridge spark a rejuvenation, a sharp Fernando Torres is the most dangerous striker in the league.

Should Torres sit out Chelsea’s match with Sunderland tomorrow, his debut is likely to come against Liverpool. New customers can sign up here for a free £25 bet.
