Chelsea and Liverpool look destined for a lunchtime letdown

Published:

Chelsea and Liverpool’s deeply ingrained rivalry pops the lid on another round of Premier League fixtures on Saturday lunchtime and given the unsettled nature of both clubs heading into the match, predicting a winner isn’t the easiest of tasks.

Historically, Stamford Bridge is far from a happy stomping grounds for the Reds, who last claimed three league points in west London back in February 2011.

Then again, traditions have been flipped on their head this season thanks to the champions’ unfathomably poor start.

Chelsea’s home ground, once the symbol of Jose Mourinho’s strength en route to three Premier League titles, has been stripped of all its fear factor thanks to two defeats and a draw from five matches top-flight matches at the Bridge in 2015/16.

Chelsea cannot be backed with anything approaching confidence at 11/10 as a result. It’s now just one win in seven across all competitions for Mourinho’s men, and defeating a side with as many deficiencies as Aston Villa can’t be labelled as a notable achievement.

Meanwhile, though Jurgen Klopp’s appointment has bred understandable optimism at Anfield, three draws and a 1-0 defeat of struggling Bournemouth in midweek, have tempered the pandemonium slightly.

The Reds look solid enough, keeping two clean sheets, but they lack a cutting edge which perhaps only a fit Daniel Sturridge, out of this game of course, could consistently provide.

Given Chelsea’s form, the Reds will tempt many at 11/4, but draw backers are certain to be the most populous punters where the match odds are concerned at 12/5.

Liverpool have ground out 0-0 stalemates at both Arsenal and Tottenham on their travels this season and have only netted multiple goals once in 15 matches all season, against…Villa.

Unfortunately for armchair fans, this fixture could well be light on goals, with the last three clashes between the sides returning less than 2.5 in total– an outcome available 8/11.
