Chaos reigns in next Newcastle manager market as Bruce bows out

Steve Bruce has no plans to make it a clean sweep of Premier League clubs from the north east after moving to quash reports linking him with a move into the vacant managerial role at Newcastle United.

The Hull boss had been the 5/2 favourite to land the job, having replaced surprise front-runner and current Magpies captain Fabricio Coloccini at the head of the market.

However Bruce has now moved to dismiss any reports linking him with a move to St James’ Park, reaffirming his commitment to the Tigers in the process.

“I am determined to see this through [with Hull] and make sure we stay in the Premier League,” he told reporters when quizzed on the subject.

Those comments have seen current temporary boss John Carver emerge as the 3/1 favourite to land the job on a permanent basis – something Chris Hughton managed to do when first appointed Toon manager on a temporary basis.

He becomes the fifth individual to be named favourite, following the likes of Bruce, Tim Sherwood, Frank de Boer and, bizarrely, Nigel Worthington.

Worthington, whose most recent job came with York City in League Two, emerged as a shock contender late last night, with his odds moving from 100/1 to 4/1 on Oddschecker. The Northern Irishman is now a 16/1 shot with Ladbrokes.

Other left-field options include Derby County’s Steve McClaren who is at 5/1 while Christophe Galtier of St Etienne can be backed at 7/1 having been previously linked to Newcastle over the summer.

Alex Donohue of Ladbrokes said: “The betting suggests Mike Ashley is set to take his time when it comes to the new Toon boss. Carver’s name is the latest to enter the frame but we expect plenty of market activity to come before an announcement is made.”
