With Yannick Bolasie’s knee injury likely to keep him out for up to a year, Everton manager Ronald Koeman has identified the left winger’s replacement in Charlton Athletic star Ademola Lookman.
But with the Addicks keen to get the player back on loan if he signs at Goodison Park in January, and Koeman desperate to slot his transfer target straight into the team – will this deal go ahead?
There’s certainly reason to believe the Toffees boss will view the 19-year-old as much more than just a temporary solution to the club’s injury woes.
Lookman has shone for Charlton this season, netting six goals already this season, in addition to his intelligent and tricky play on the wing. And it seems he’s sure to make the step up from League One sooner rather than later.
With Everton having an outside chance of securing European football for next season, and their current lack of a natural left-winger in the senior side, there’s plenty of reason to believe the teenager would be keen on a move to Goodison Park.
But while they remain the frontrunners for his signature, that potential deal-breaker could possibly see another Premier League club take advantage – with Arsenal also believed to be interested in the young Londoner.
With Charlton reportedly holding out for £11m, the teenager won’t come cheap, but both the Gunners and Toffees showed during the summer that they’re willing to splash the cash – so neither is likely to be deterred by the asking fee.
For now though, Koeman’s immediate focus will be on Monday night’s Merseyside derby, as the Toffees look for a first win in 13 meetings with Liverpool.
