Gary Cahill’s winner against Everton on Wednesday night may be one of his last meaningful acts in a Bolton shirt, but it could prove to be a big moment in the relegation battle.
His 78th minute strike was enough to see Bolton pick up all three points after David N’Gog equalised Tim Howard’s freak goal for Everton.
However, Cahill is in the midst of talks with Chelsea about a £7million move to the west London club and, although things have stalled due to an inability to agree personal terms, the England international is almost certain to leave the club in January.
The three points mean Bolton are now 18th in the table and are just one point behind Wolves and QPR who occupy the places immediately above them.
Bolton have now drifted to 4/7 to be relegated – the same as Blackburn Rovers – following their fourth away win of the season
Meanwhile, Wigan are now favourites for the drop at 1/2.
The Latics were hammered 4-1 by a resurgent Sunderland side on Tuesday and their vulnerability to a counter-attack was ruthlessly exploited by Martin O’Neill’s side.
Roberto Martinez’s men have won just once at the DW Stadium in the league this season and they have not tasted victory in their last eight Premier League home games – a run that has included five defeats.
Meanwhile, Wolves and QPR are both 13/8 to drop back into the Championship following a poor festive period for both teams.
With no side being cut adrift at the foot of the table, the relegation market continues to provide some enticing odds and is well worth keeping an eye on in the coming weeks and months.
