It seems one of the Premier League’s most decorated and revered players ever will be heading back to English football in 2017. But it’s a Championship club, and more specifically Brighton & Hove Albion who lead the race to sign the legendary Frank Lampard.
The 38-year-old is without a club after leaving MLS outfit New York City in November, and it seems Seagulls boss Chris Hughton could be about to swoop for the free agent.
It’s 5/2 that Lampard makes the Amex Stadium his next destination, with high-flying Brighton currently on course for promotion to the top-flight.
Having netted 15 goals in 31 games for his last employers, the veteran still possesses a fine finish and his passing ability remains second-to-none.
With three Premier League titles, four FA Cup winners medals, a Champions League triumph and an incredible 106 England caps under his belt, Lampard can also offer invaluable experience and a calm head to any side.
That view seems to be shared by Sam Allardyce, with the Crystal Palace boss reportedly keen to get his hands on Lampard – and it’s 7/2 the Eagles beat their fierce rivals to the punch by landing his signature.
Next up at 4/1 is a return to Chelsea, where the Romford native won 11 major honours, playing 648 times in a 13-year spell.
They’re followed by two more former clubs, Swansea City (12/1) where a 17-year-old Lampard spent a brief-but-impressive loan spell, and West Ham United (16/1), the club he left acrimoniously back in 2001.
With the bookies rating it as a 1/2 shot that the former Blues’ ace returns to English football in 2017, we look sure to see him on these shores again. The question is…where?
