As the old saying goes Rome wasn’t built in a day and it could be true of Louis van Gaal’s new era at Manchester United after the Dutchman claimed he has inherited a broken squad.
In a blast at David Moyes’ reign at Old Trafford the former Holland manager insists his squad is “unbalanced and broken” following a disastrous season when the Red Devils finished seventh in the Barclays Premier League.
Since Van Gaal’s arrival there has been plenty of positive vibes around Old Trafford and confidence in a quick return to the Champions League.
But after LVG’s cautious comments Ladbrokes have come up with a special price of 7/4 for United to finish outside the top four again this season.
With the likes of Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney in the squad United have the firepower to have an excellent season but with Danny Welbeck, Javier Hernandez, Juan Mata, Adnan Januzaj, and Marouane Fellaini all vying for limited attacking positions Van Gaal has bemoaned the unbalanced nature of his squad.
So far Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera are the only new names through the door but with the likes of Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra moving on and Michael Carrick out injured, defensive and midfield reinforcements are needed.
The club’s much publicised chase for Arturo Vidal has not come to fruition yet, while links to the likes of Mats Hummels and Stefan De Vrij have proved to be wide of the mark.
With still over a month left of the transfer window LVG still has time to strengthen his squad but if Ed Woodward oversees another transfer window like the one which left the club hideously short in key positions, United could be made to wait a bit longer for a return to European football’s top table.
