Arsenal’s Cech heads 5 best transfers so far this summer

A busy summer of wheeling and dealing concludes over the next 36 hours and there is sure to be swarm of ambitious bids and a number of panic buys. But some clubs have got their business done early and those players are already starting to make their marks.

Here we look at five of the best moves by Premier League clubs so far

Petr Cech

We know he had a shocker against West Ham, and wasn’t exactly incredible at Crystal Palace, but his performance against Liverpool underlined why the experienced goalkeeper was such a great signing.

A snip at £10m, Cech offers a security that the Gunners have not had since the departure of Jens Lehmann. The 33-year-old stopper will win the north London outfit plenty of points this season and could be one of Wenger’s best ever signings.

Dimitri Payet

The man from Marseille went under the radar a little bit when he joined West Ham this summer for around £12m. Those who have watched Ligue 1 over the last few years will not have been surprised at the French playmaker’s impact.

He created more chances than any other player in Europe’s top five leagues last season and was the leading assist maker in the French top-flight. He has been hugely impressive in England so far and the Hammers will need him to shine if they are to have a good campaign.

Georginio Wijnaldum

The PSV star came to Newcastle with a big reputation and a big price tag of around £13m. He has so far lived up to his value, scoring in his first game at St James’ Park and generally impressing in the famous black and white.

The Toon have only garnered two points in the Premier League but Wijnaldum is a big part of why optimism is so high in the north-east.

Nathaniel Clyne

The Southampton right-back swapped St Mary’s for Anfield this summer and for the paltry price of just £12.5m. The 24-year-old looks destined to be England and Liverpool’s first choice for the foreseeable future and he has added a different dimension to the Reds, both offensively and at the back.

He is not only good on the ball and possessing of a great delivery, Clyne does the defensive things well, as he showed when faced with Alexis Sanchez last week at the Emirates.

Matteo Darmian

Another right full-back makes the cut and rightly so. Manchester United needed an upgrade on Antonio Valencia in this position and the signing of Matteo Darmian was something of a surprise.

However, since arriving from Torino he has looked assured and extremely comfortable in Louis van Gaal’s system. First and foremost he defends superbly, while still having the engine to get forward and cause problems in attack. Pretty much the Italian Gary Neville, and that is by no means a bad thing.
