Sergio Aguero may have moved to within three goals of Robin Van Persie in the race for the Premier League Golden Boot with his opener against Liverpool, but the Arsenal striker still seems the man to back in the Premier League odds at 11/10 to top the scoring charts come May.
There is little to choose between the pair in the opening half of the season in relation to scoring regularity, with Van Persie netting 17 goals in 20 Arsenal appearances, while Aguero has 14 goals in 17 starts for Manchester City.
Here may lie Aguero’s leading problem as he battles for a starting berth with the likes of Mario Balotelli and Edin Dzeko for the one spot leading the line.
The good news for Aguero backers is that he does seem the go-to man of Roberto Mancini, featuring in all but one of Manchester City’s league outings thus far.
Meanwhile, the exit of the reigning Premier League leaders from the Champions League means that Aguero will be better rested than his Arsenal rival.
Aguero is 9/4 to win the Golden Boot and he will arguably need to at worst maintain his current scoring record to have a chance of success.
Van Persie has no such selection worries at Arsenal and he is easily the current first name on the teamsheet, scoring as good as half of their league goals so far this season.
He will continue to lead the line barring injuries and looks well on track to netting 30 Premier League goals in a season for the first time.
The only foreseeable problem for Van Persie is that he is unlikely to gain much rest, shouldering the responsibility for goals as Arsenal continue to battle for a top-four Premier League spot and in Europe.
Therefore, not only is there a greater risk of injury for a player who has had his fair share of injury issues in the past, but also the risk of burnout over the second half of the season.
Alternatively, Wayne Rooney is 7/2 to win the Golden Boot.
