Manchester United stopper David de Gea insists that Victor Valdes has not been brought to Old Trafford as his successor.
Valdes has been training with United in a bid to regain fitness and is largely expected to join the squad in the coming weeks.
And, while De Gea says he is not threatened by his compatriot’s presence, rumours linking the youngster with Real Madrid refuse to fade with his contract expiring in 2016.
While Anders Lindegaard is set to start at the Emirates this week – in a game that sees United priced as 23/10 underdogs – we look at some potential long-term future number ones for the Red Devils.
Victor Valdes – Unattached
An obvious one given his presence at the club already but should De Gea opt to return to his homeland few better keepers would be available on a free.
At 32 Valdes still has a good few years left in him and as a six-time La Liga and three-time Champions League winner has the credentials needed to direct United’s inexperienced back line.
Hugo Lloris – Tottenham
Reports this week suggest Madrid will target the Spurs stopper if they fail to lure De Gea away from Old Trafford.
Should the Spanish club prove successful in their bid, however, Lloris would be at the top of United’s wish list after a string of solid displays for the north Londoners.
With Spurs underperforming the Frenchman could start angling for a move away and United would relish a ‘keeper with Premier League experience.
Marc-André ter Stegen – Barcelona
United have been linked with the young German in the past and despite moving to the Nou Camp in the summer the 22-year-old could already be fed up with life in Spain.
Barca recruited the former Monchengladbach stopper after some dazzling displays during his 127 appearances for the club but he has yet to be trusted in La Liga action.
All four of his Barca appearances to date have come in Europe and if Claudio Brava continues to be preferred for league action United could tempt him.
