Sulky Salah nearest challenger in Premier League top scorer odds

Erling Haaland broke the Premier League record for goals in one season with 36 in his debut campaign and after scoring twice against Burnley on Friday night the Manchester City striker is already the 1/3 favourite to win the Golden Boot again.

The Norwegian finished six goals clear of Tottenham striker Harry Kane last season, but with the England captain having joined Bayern Munich for £100m, Mo Salah is now viewed as his nearest rival.

With the new season under way, we take a look at the latest Premier League top scorer odds.

Erling Haaland

Pep Guardiola chastised his star striker on the pitch just seconds after the half-time whistle at Turf Moor despite Haaland having scored both goals before the break – the first after just four minutes with his first touch!

Guardiola was reportedly unhappy that Haaland wanted to run on to passes behind the defence rather than receiving the ball to feet, but despite the feud the former Borussia Dortmund forward already shares top spot with Alexander Isak in the goalscoring charts.

City face Newcastle at the weekend but then have a cosy run of fixtures between now and the clash with Arsenal on October 7, so Haaland can take an early grip on his bid to finish top scorer in the Premier League once again.

Premier League top scorer odds: 1/3

Mo Salah

Salah is a three-time Golden Boot winner, but his chances of joining Thierry Henry on four got off to a disappointing start at the weekend when he was substituted late in the game without scoring.

The Egyptian rattled the crossbar with an early effort and soon after had a goal ruled out for offside following a VAR review before revealing his frustration when he ripped off his wrist tapes and threw them to the ground one by one when taken off by Jurgen Klopp 13 minutes from time.

Salah had previously scored in the first game of every season at Liverpool, but he will get the chance to get off the mark on Saturday when the Reds host Bournemouth as he looks to add to his eight goals in as many appearances against the Cherries.

Premier League top scorer odds: 10/1

Alexander Isak

The Swede got the nod ahead of Callum Wilson on Saturday and justified Eddie Howe’s faith by scoring a double in a 5-1 victory over Aston Villa.

Isak scored 10 goals last season – 26 behind Haaland – but he looked sharp at the weekend and can challenge the Norwegian if he manages to stay free from injury, although he is up against Manchester City and Liverpool in the Magpies’ next two games.

Premier League top scorer odds: 16/1

Darwin Nunez

Nunez is the fourth favourite for the Golden Boot, but was on the bench for Sunday’s draw at Stamford Bridge, coming on for the last quarter without scoring.

The Uruguay striker scored four goals in pre-season, but did not start the last two friendlies and that was the case in west London, so it remains to be seen how he will deployed by Klopp, who has a plethora of riches up front.

Premier League top scorer odds: 20/1

Marcus Rashford

The Manchester United striker Rashford enjoyed his joint-best season with 17 goals in the 2022-23 campaign, but fired blanks in Monday’s fortunate 1-0 victory over Wolves.

The England striker was taken off a couple of minutes from time as manager Erik ten Hag tried to see the game out.

United travel to Tottenham and Arsenal either side of a home game against Nottingham Forest in their next three games, so Rashford has a tough task on his hands if he is to get off the mark.

Premier League top scorer odds: 20/1

Son Heung-min

The newly-appointed Tottenham captain is playing without Harry Kane for the first time, so it remains to be seen how he will perform this season.

The 2021-22 joint Golden Boot scored just 10 goals last season – his worst return since his debut campaign in 2015-16 when he struck four times.

Spurs host Manchester United next, but games against Bournemouth, Burnley and Sheffield United offer the South Korean the chance to steal some momentum in the race to finish top scorer.

Premier League top scorer odds: 20/1

Best of the rest

Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins spurned several chances to score at St James’ Park and is 25/1 to finish top of the pile, the same price as Manchester United’s new signing Rasmus Hojlund, who is currently injured.

Bukayo Saka scored a career-best 14 goals for Arsenal last season and started the new campaign with a wonder goal in a 2-1 victory over Nottingham Forest, so looks an interesting option at 33/1.

New Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson is also available at 33/1, but failed to score at the weekend. Tottenham’s Richarlison and Arsenal’s Gabriel Jesus are both 40/1.
