Liverpool v Southampton Betting Tips: Can fresh Reds march past Saints?
Liverpool’s hopes of keeping up with their top-four rivals were dealt a bizarre blow on Sunday when their trip to Manchester United was postponed because of fans protesting against the home team’s American owners.
The Reds drew their last two games against Leeds and Newcastle, but are unbeaten in five and priced at 2/7 to beat Saints who are 9/1 to repeat their victory at St Mary’s in the first week of January.
Only a win will suffice for Jurgen Klopp’s side so let’s check out the facts and figures for our Liverpool v Southampton betting tips.
Liverpool may have lost to Southampton at the turn of the year, but they have won this fixture comfortably in the past three seasons and not conceded in four.
The Merseysiders enjoyed 3-0 wins at Anfield in 2017 and 2018, and 15 months ago they went one better with a 4-0 victory.
Liverpool are available at 5/4 to win to nil and 3/4 to do so with three match goals, with four priced at 33/20, bearing in mind Saints have endured some heavy defeats on the road this season, namely the 9-0 and 5-2 routs at Manchester United and City.
That said, Liverpool have been fairly woeful at home in 2021, failing to score at Anfield in six of their nine games, so it may be wiser to look at the Liverpool to win and under 3.5 goals market which is priced at 13/10.
Ralph Hassenhuttl’s side have lost 12 of their previous 16 Premier League games and if the season had double the number of games remaining there would have been legitimate concerns for their status in the top flight.
Liverpool should be nice and fresh following Sunday’s postponement and it remains to be seen whether Klopp will try to cram all his attackers into a 4-4-2 formation as he did during the draw with Newcastle.
Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino spearheaded the attack with Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah operating on the left and right side of midfield, but the ploy failed to deliver, with Klopp questioning whether the Reds deserved Champions League football in his post-match interview.
Southampton dug deep for a 1-1 draw against Leicester last time out which came despite the 10th-minute dismissal of Jannik Vestergaard who is suspended.
Striker Danny Ings scored the only goal in January but he is unavailable to face his former club owing to a hamstring injury which could rule him out for the rest of the season.
Salah has scored in this fixture in each of the last three seasons, two of which were doubles.
The Egyptian has struck five times in his last eight games in all competitions and is 3/4 to score any time and 10/3 to bag a brace or better just as he did last season.
Mane is going through a barren spell despite opening the scoring at Leeds and he is available at 17/10 to get on the scoresheet, with Andy Robertson 14/1 an outsider to score only his second goal of the campaign.
James Ward-Prowse is Saints’ top scorer in the absence of Ings with eight goals and the England midfielder can be backed at 7/2 to get past Alisson.
