Norwich and Sheffield Weds battle it out for Jordan Rhodes

Published:

Earlier today we reported that Nottingham Forest could be tempting Middlesbrough’s Jordan Rhodes with a move back to the Championship, but as the clock ticks until 11pm, it’s Norwich and Sheffield Wednesday who are doing the late running.

Despite only joining in January, Rhodes appears to have been frozen out at Boro under Aitor Karanka, with the  Teessiders stepping things up since promotion to the Premier League, signing Alvaro Negredo.

Reports earlier today suggests Forest may use their windfall from selling Olivier Burke for £13m to RB Leibzig, but it appears the City Ground won’t be making any notable Deadline Day signings this year.

Rhodes’ dad Andy is the current goalkeeping coach for the Owls, while Norwich represent an equally good place for a shot at promotion back into the Premier League.

It seems both teams are keen to sign one of the Championships’ hottest strikers in recent seasons, with Rhodes himself staring at the prospect of a season wasted on the bench at Middlesbrough.

The Scotland international has 92 goals to his name in the second tier, and whoever wins the race for his signature would be effectively guaranteed over 15 goals.

Wednesday have already done a deal with Boro to sign winger Adam Reach, and that, coupled with Rhodes’ dad in the back room staff, might hand the Hillsborough club the edge.

Norwich have already signed Nelson Olivera from Benfica this week, and it remains to be seen if the club feel they need to sell Steven Naismith before bringing in Rhodes.

Time is ticking though, and both these clubs need to get a shuffle on to land one of the hottest strikers still available.
