Newcastle v West Ham betting tips and odds

Newcastle’s Premier League opener against West Ham takes place against the rumbling backdrop of the club’s potential takeover which has resulted in no new players coming to St James’ Park during the transfer window.

The Magpies enjoyed an excellent end to the season which saw them pull away from the relegation zone and they are 23/10 to beat the Hammers as they did home and away last term.

David Moyes’ side fell just short of securing a place in the Champions League, so it will be interesting to see how they fare this time as we look at the markets and odds in our Newcastle v West Ham betting tips.

Match Odds

The Magpies finished 12th last season but uncertainty surrounding the club means they are just 11/4 to be relegated and 1/9 for another bottom-half finish.

However, they took advantage of Craig Dawson’s first-half dismissal to secure a 3-2 victory against West Ham last season and can be backed at 19/4 to win and concede once again or winning to nil as they did on the opening day of the season at the London Stadium is 5/1.

Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard proved to be an inspirational loan signing for West Ham and his double in the 3-2 victory over Leicester sent the east Londoners to fourth in the table with seven games remaining but three defeats meant they had to settle for sixth and a place in the Europa League.

Moyes’ men are 6/5 to win at St James’ Park and the draw is priced at 12/5 while both teams to score is 7/10 bearing in mind only Manchester United had a better record in this area than the Hammers.

West Ham’s matches produced on average 2.87 goals per game last season and we go 20/23 on three or more on Tyneside.

As well as the Hammers did last season, they were the Premier League leaders for draws in the first half away from home with 12 of their matches all square at the break and that outcome is 21/20 in our Newcastle v West Ham betting tips.

In the #GetAPrice specials, the visitors are 5/4 to win or draw, Newcastle under 0.5 goals in the first half and under 3.5 goals in the match bearing in mind Steve Bruce’s team failed to score in the opening 45 minutes at home in 10 of their 19 matches.

Talking Tactics

Moyes preferred a 4-2-3-1 last season with Michail Antonio the lone striker and Lingard just behind but the midfielder is now back with his parent club, although his future at Old Trafford remains uncertain.

Bruce favoured five at the back last season which drew the ire of Newcastle fans who thought his tactics were too negative.

However, when Allan Saint-Maximin, Miguel Almiron and Callum Wilson were on the pitch at the same time, they looked a threatening side so Bruce will be keeping his fingers crossed injuries don’t hit his squad again as they did throughout the season.

Goalscorer Odds

Callum Wilson is doubtful for the game but is the 7/2 favourite to bag the opener, while Saint-Maximin, reportedly struggling with illness, and Almiron are 9/1 and 10/1 respectively.

Dwight Gayle netted a double in a 3-0 win against Norwich in the final pre-season friendly and is 2/1 to get on the scoresheet.

Antonio was the Hammers’ joint top scorer with 10 goals last season and he broke the deadlock in the 2-0 win against Atalanta in their final warm-up, so we make him 9/2 to draw first blood.

Tomas Soucek also hit double figures last season and is 7/1 to net the opener or 14/5 just to score.
