Newcastle v Sheffield United betting tips: Magpies flying high

Published:

Sheffield United may have been relegated but they are going down fighting having won two of their last four games and are priced at 15/4 to pick up another three points.

Newcastle will have 10,000 fans returning to St James’ Park at the tail end of an encouraging finish to the season which has produced wins against Leicester, West Ham and Burnley in the last six weeks during which they also drew with Tottenham and Liverpool.

We take a look at the odds for Wednesday’s game to help with your Newcastle v Sheffield United betting tips.

Match Odds

The Magpies have proved they are a match for the best teams in the Premier League when they have their star players fit having pushed champions Manchester City all the way in a 4-3 defeat last time out.

Newcastle are one of only six teams to lose to the Blades this season but are 8/11 to avenge that defeat just like last season when they won home and away by a 5-0 aggregate.

Steve Bruce’s men are 21/10 to win to nil again against a Blades team that have lost 28 of their 36 games, 23 of which came by under 3.5 match goals which is priced at 8/5.

For those of you interested in the goalscoring markets, the Magpies broke the deadlock between 21-30 minutes against Leicester and Manchester City in their last two games and are 6/1 to get their first goal during that spell.

Their opponents are comfortably the lowest scorers in the Premier League with just 19 goals and they have failed to find the net 20 times, so we go 8/5 on the Blades not to score.

Talking Tactics

Bruce is likely to stick with a 5-3-2 formation with Joelinton and Miguel Almiron spearheading the attack in the absence of Callum Wilson, who will miss the remaining games of the season with a hamstring injury.

Paul Heckingbottom went with the usual 3-5-2 for the win at Goodison Park where Jack O’Connell, John Egan and Chris Basham were rocks at the back in what was only their fourth clean sheet of the season.

However, the interim manager has “seven or eight injuries” and revealed he will “make changes from the bench if we make them”.

Goalscorer Odds

The Magpies have been prolific in front of goal lately, scoring 15 goals since the start of April, seven of which came against Leicester and Manchester City.

On-loan Arsenal winger Joe Willock has scored in five successive games and is 5/1 to break the deadlock or 15/8 just to get on the scoresheet.

Joelinton is 9/2 to get the ball rolling and 17/10 to score, having found the net in three of his last eight matches, while defenders Paul Dummett and Emil Krafth are 16/1 to add to their recent strikes.

David McGoldrick is Sheffield United’s top scorer with eight goals in all competitions and is 2/1 to breach Newcastle’s defence.
