It’s hard to believe that just six months ago Brisbane Roar were lifting the A-League trophy. Now, four games into the new campaign and they sit rooted to the foot of the table without a single point.
Thankfully for them, perhaps, they take on an equally suffering Newcastle Jets next with Phil Stubbin’s side also still looking for their maiden win of the season.
Jumping into the win-draw-win market looks fraught with difficulties, so Ladbrokes News’ Ben Stones has picked out three alternative bets to have at the Hunter Stadium.
This one is pretty straight forward, with neither side seemingly knowing how to defend.
Between the pair they have conceded 21 goals in nine games in the A-League this season, and is a big chunk of the reason the sides are languishing where they are.
Nevertheless, both teams are more than capable of finding the net, and with neither side keeping a clean sheet this season in the league, this looks a straightforward pick.
As mentioned, the Jets have moved on from the heady days of Emile Heskey leading the line with aplomb, and can still trouble defences, even if they can’t win.
They’ve scored twice in their last three, and five of their last five at home in the A-League, and combined with Brisbane’s almost non-existent defence – they’ve shipped two or three in all five games this season – could bag at least a couple.
While Newcastle know their way around the attacking third, it seems to be their concentration that is lacking.
They’ve taken the lead in three of their last four, but their inability to hold out a lead has been there for all to see.
From those three winning positions, they’ve collected just two points, so don’t rule out a late Roar comeback in New South Wales.
