Ligue 1 winner odds: PSG hot favourites to win back title

Ligue 1 winner odds and preview

Lille caused a sensation by winning Ligue 1 on the final day of last season by one point from defending champions PSG.

That was their sixth championship success and their first in 10 years but despite their thrilling win, PSG are the 1/6 favourites in the Ligue 1 winner odds to wrest the title back.

Just seven points separated the top four in what was a thrilling climax to the season and hopefully it will be similar in the forthcoming campaign as we look at the main contenders in the French top flight.

PSG’s determination to win the Champions League meant they took their eye off the ball domestically as a 1-0 home defeat by Lille proved costly.

Head coach Mauricio Pochettino had been linked with a stunning return to Tottenham although he was also said to have been in talks with Real Madrid before PSG decided to activate a contract extension at the end of May.

PSG have been extremely busy during the transfer window, bringing in Netherlands midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum from Liverpool after he failed to agree a new contract.

Sergio Ramos has also joined on a two-year contract and has been followed by Inter Milan wing-back Achraf Hakimi, while Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarummeis is also thought to be on his way as a free agent.

Lille may be the champions but Lyon are next in the Ligue 1 winner odds at 10/1 despite failing to qualify for the Champions League after a dismal 3-2 home defeat by Nice on the last day of the season in a match which they led twice.

Rudi Garcia left the club as a result and although Nice coach Christophe Galtiier turned down the chance to lead the club, Lyon eventually appointed former Bayer Leverkusen manager Peter Bosz.

However, Memphis Depay left the club to join Barcelona on a free transfer so they clearly have a weaker squad than last season.

Lille enjoyed their best season in 10 years but they lost several key players during the transfer window, including midfielder Boubakary Soumare who joined Leicester in an £18million deal.

Goalkeeper Mike Maignan signed for AC Milan as a replacement for PSG-bound Gianluigi Donnarumma, so Jocelyn Gourvennec has a tough task on his hands trying to repeat last season’s incredible success and his side are 12/1 in the Ligue 1 winner odds.

Monaco snapped up the final Champions League spot on the last day of the season with a goalless draw at Lens just four days after losing the French Cup final to PSG.

Niko Kovac must do without right-back Benjamin Henrichs, who joined Leipzig recently, and Stevan Jovetic has left on a free transfer.

Monaco have improved dramatically over the past two seasons and they are 14/1 in the Ligue 1 winner odds to win their first title in five seasons.
