Derby win thrusts Port Vale back into League Two title picture
Published:League Two leaders Chesterfield were tripped up this weekend after three successive victories, forced to settle for a goalless draw away to promoted Stevenage, and their closest rivals showed no sign of reluctance to exploit the stumble.
Port Vale proved that there’s proof in the old adage about form counting for nothing come derby day by ending their recent winless run against Crewe, who headed into the encounter undefeated in 11 league matches.
Bury maintained their own hot streak to join the Valiants in cutting Chesterfield’s advantage down from four points to one, triumphing 3-1 on their travels against Aldershot. There was also a sign of life at Shrewsbury after their recent struggles, a 2-1 win over Barnet sending them fourth.
The title betting is almost as tight as the league table, with those four clubs at the top of the pile. Port Vale are the favourites at 7/2 to finish first, then Chesterfield are next in line at 4/1, ahead of Bury at 11/2 and Shrewsbury at 7/1. Of that bunch, Bury have the momentum right now.
Elsewhere, there were 5-0 successes for two sides that started the season very poorly, with Hereford physio guiding his team off the bottom with a spectacular win over troubled Stockport and Bradford doing the same to Oxford at Valley Parade.
