Southampton bring some Brazilian flair to St Mary’s with Guly

League One promotion favourites Southampton have beaten off the advances of some of the biggest clubs in Serie A to land Brazilian attacking midfielder Guilherme do Prado Guly.

Roma and Chievo were among the clubs monitoring the 28-year-old after he played an instrumental role in helping Cesena secure their own promotion to Serie A last season thanks to his nine goals in 34 appearances.

However, he has opted to for an initial five-month loan at Southampton, with the chance to make the deal permanent when the next transfer window is opened in January.

Guly said: “I have always wanted to play in England and at the highest possible level.

“The chairman sold me his vision for where this club is going and I wanted to be a part of that and help take this club through the divisions.”

Southampton are the 3/1 favourites to win League One, despite making an ordinary start by taking just one point from their opening two games.

This is something that they will aim to put right when going in search of their first victory when travelling to Bristol Rovers next and they are 5/4 to gain the three points.

However, first their priorities lie in the cup competitions, with a second round clash with Premier League outfit Bolton awaiting in the Carling Cup.

Guly could make his Southampton debut in the showdown if his international clearance is gained in time and they are 15/8 to win inside the 90 minutes.

Meanwhile, Guly can be backed at 10/1 to be the game’s first goalscorer, with Rickie Lambert the favourite to break the deadlock at 5/1.
