League One promotion odds and preview

The Football League season gets under way next month and we’re taking a look at the League One promotion odds.

Sunderland are the 5/2 favourites to end a four-year stay in League One after losing to Lincoln in the play-offs having finished fourth in the table last term.

We have already analysed the League One title odds and you can also read our previews for the Championship title odds and Championship promotion odds.

The Black Cats were just two points outside the automatic promotion places when they beat Oxford 3-1 in April but just one victory from their last nine games meant they finished well short.

As a result Sunderland released seven players, including captain Max Power and Chris Maguire, while Charlie Wyke turned down a new deal to join Wigan, so manager Lee Johnson has a rebuilding project on his hands. But he has already taken a step in the right direction by signing midfielder Alex Pritchard on a two-year deal following his release by Huddersfield.

The Tractor Boys finished ninth in the table last season but manager Paul Cook has overhauled the squad ahead of the new campaign and they are 3/1 in the League One promotion odds.

Wes Burns, Lee Evans, Rekeem Harper, Macauley Bonne, Vaclav Hladky and Matt Penney have all joined the club and there is optimism Ipswich can get back to the second tier this season.

Sheffield Wednesday

The Owls released 10 players following their relegation to League One, including long-serving players like Keiren Westwood and Tom Lees as well as Jordan Rhodes while defender Osaze Urhoghide turned down a new contract to follow Liam Shaw to Celtic.

Manager Darren Moore has signed former Everton midfielder Dennis Adeniran, who spent last season on loan at Wycombe, and QPR winger Olamide Shodipo on loan, with more expected before the season starts and they are 3/1 in the League One promotion odds.

Four wins and a draw from their last seven games meant the Latics finished just a point clear of the relegation zone last season and several high-profile signings have seen their League One promotion odds cut to 10/3.

Power and Wyke have arrived from Sunderland, who face Wigan on the opening day of the season, while Stephen Humphrys, Ben Amos, Jack Whatmough, Tom Naylor, Gwion Edwards and Jordan Cousins have all joined the club, who were taken over by Phoenix Ltd at the end of March.

Best of the rest

Portsmouth are 10/3 in the League One promotion odds despite dropping out of the play-offs with a final-day defeat by Accrington.

Manager Danny Cowley has been busy recruiting ahead of the new season, with former Sheffield United and Swansea full-back Kieron Freeman the sixth new arrival during the summer transfer window.

Bolton secured automatic promotion last season despite a poor first half of the campaign in League Two and Ian Evatt has brought in eight new signings, including Declan John and Dapo Afolayan who have signed permanent deals following successful loan spells.

The Trotters are 5/1 in the League One promotion odds while last season’s play-off sides Oxford and Lincoln are 4/1 and 9/2 respectively.
