Italy v Austria betting tips: Azzurri eye quarter-final spot at Wembley
Published:Italy are now second favourites with Germany to win Euro 2020 having won all three of their Group A games and are 8/15 to beat Austria inside 90 minutes at Wembley in the last 16 on Saturday.
Conspiracy theorists expected Austria to draw with Ukraine on Monday to ensure both nations went through but a header from Christoph Baumgartner secured a 1-0 win and second place in Group B.
That victory ensured Franco Foda’s side reached the knockout stage of a major tournament for the first time, so let’s look at the odds to help with our Italy v Austria betting tips.
Match Odds
The Azzurri have been extremely impressive at the European Championship, equalling their own 30-match unbeaten record with Sunday’s 1-0 victory over 10-man Wales.
The Italians were also ahead at the break in nine of those 11 wins and are available at 7/5 to be leading at half-time and full-time.
But Austria coach Foda is confident his side can spring an upset, saying: “If we act and perform like today I think we have our options against Italy. We know how they play. We will find solutions and in one match everything is possible.”
Two of their three group wins have been won 3-0 and five of their last 11 victories have been by a 2-0 scoreline.
Talking Tactics
Mancini rang the changes for the win against Wales, so we should expect to see Ciro Immobile, Lorenzo Insigne and Domenico Berardi return to the starting line-up in a 4-3-3 formation.
Italy have been superb with and without the ball, their remorseless pressing game proving difficult for opponents to find the space necessary to break down their seemingly invincible defence.
Defender Giorgio Chiellini missed the win against Wales with a thigh injury he sustained five minutes after he had a goal chalked off for handball in the 3-0 win against Switzerland so faces a race to be fit.
Baumgartner was involved in a clash of heads prior to his winner against Ukraine and was replaced by Alessandro Schopf in the first half, although he is more likely to be available than Chiellini.
Goalscorer Odds
Immobile scored in Italy’s first two games but was rested against Wales so predictably he is 3/1 to break the deadlock and 7/5 to score at any time while Insigne and Berardi are 9/2 to get the game’s first goal.
Jorginho is Italy’s penalty taker and is 11/1 to bag the opener or 5/1 just to score, the same odds as Manuel Locatelli who bagged a brace against Switzerland.
Marko Arnautovic returned from suspension for the Ukraine game and fluffed his lines when he side-footed a simple chance wide from near the penalty spot and then had a tame effort gathered by keeper Georgi Bushchan.
