GB v Australia betting tips and odds

Great Britain’s bid for Olympic gold continues with a quarter-final clash against Australia in Kashima on Friday in what will be the first meeting between the nations at a major tournament.

Hege Riise’s unbeaten side drew with Canada to finish top of Group E with seven points and are 4/5 to beat the Matildas inside 90 minutes and 7/2 second favourites behind USA to win the competition.

This will be the first meeting between the countries in almost three years so let’s look at the markets and odds in our GB v Australia betting tips.

Match Odds

Scotland’s Caroline Weir fired Britain to the top of their pool after getting the luck she deserved with a deflected equaliser to secure a 1-1 draw against Canada five minutes from time having previously hit the bar and post.

Ellen White was rested as one of five changes with qualification to the knockout stage already in the bag and in an added boost Fran Kirby came on for the final 13 minutes after shaking off an injury.

Australia have had a superb tournament, finishing third in the toughest group of all in which they beat New Zealand 2-1, drew with world champions USA and were leading eventual group winners Sweden 2-1 only to go down to a 4-2 defeat.

Team GB – who feature in our Olympics women’s football odds – conceded just once during the group stage and are 2/1 to win to nil or 3/1 or 29/20 to come out on top with under 2.5 or 3.5 match goals respectively.

Two of Britain’s three matches were goalless at the break, so we go 33/20 on 0-0 at half-time or 21/20 on a draw.

Nineteen members of Britain’s 22-woman squad are from England, who drew 1-1 with Australia in a friendly in 2018 when Kirby opened the scoring. The scores to be tied at the end of 90 minutes is 13/5 and it’s 7/2 on that outcome with goals at both ends.

England won 1-0 and 3-0 in the previous two meetings, only one of which was competitive, so with that in mind we have 1-0, 2-0 or 3-0 wins at 6/1, 7/1 and 12/1 respectively as some of our GB v Australia betting tips.

Talking Tactics

Riise is likely to bring back the players that started the 1-0 win against Japan, which means starts for White, Steph Houghton, Kim Little, Keira Walsh and Georgia Stanway in a 4-5-1 formation.

Despite scoring against Australia and getting minutes against Canada, Kirby is likely to be on the bench.

Chelsea striker and Australia skipper Sam Kerr is likely to play up front with Mary Fowler and Kyah Simon in a 3-4-3 system.
