Before the draw for the FA Cup’s fourth round we had already raved about Manchester United’s chances of lifting the trophy for the first time since 2004, and that possibility was done no harm when they pulled a trip to Conference outfit Cambridge United out of the hat.
However, when looking down the list of fixtures for the competition’s next stage, there are some other Premier League sides that warrant a flutter after landing favourable ties.
At 40/1 to lift the trophy, Sunderland are the choice pick considering they are due to face the winner of Fulham’s replay with Wolves at home.
Gus Poyet has already shown himself to be a capable cup manager, having reached the final of the Capital One Cup last season and the quarter finals of the FA Cup in that same campaign.
The Black Cats knocked out a Championship side (Leeds) at home in the last round and will surely be odds on to win when either of the second tier outfits hit the north east later this month.
Like Sunderland, Swansea are recent League Cup finalists and will face Championship opposition when the fourth round gets underway, with an away tie at Blackburn falling in their lap during the draw.
Garry Monk’s men are 28/1 fancies for FA Cup glory this season, but haven’t been beyond the sixth round since their 1963/64 semi-final trip.
Aston Villa, 50/1 to win the competition, and 40/1-shots West Brom were also handed games against sides from the league below, drawing Bournemouth and Birmingham respectively, but neither are in form good enough to back.
Finally, the draw was kind to the leading-lights for the tournament, with 9/2 favourites Man City set to face Middlesbrough at the Etihad, 4/1 chances Chelsea welcoming either Milwall or Bradford to Stamford Bridge and Arsenal due a trip south to face Brighton.
