Until that next piece of silverware is safely stowed in the dust-gathering trophy cabinet at the Emirates Stadium, it doesn’t matter what Arsenal do, or how slick their football, they will always be talked about as nearly-men and underachievers.
However, the latest piece of good news in Arsenal’s best Premier League campaign for six seasons suggests the club’s detractors are now some way off the mark.
Arsenal’s star of this season Aaron Ramsey, and the man voted the club’s player of last season, Santi Cazorla , have just committed their futures to the cause by signing fresh contracts.
Ramsey, 23, who had racked up 13 goals before injury struck at Christmas, is expected to remain a Gunner until 2019, while 29-year-old Cazorla is thought to have extended his current deal until 2017.
It seems the troubled days of Arsenal’s top players deserting the Emirates have finally vanished, which has to be attributed to Arsenal’s concerted hunt for silverware this season.
Facing the tasty prospect of an FA Cup semi-final against Championship opposition, albeit Wigan who just accounted for Manchester City, the Gunners are extremely well placed to win the competition; a notion backed up by their 4/9 favouritism to lift the trophy.
Meanwhile, their 12/1 outsider status of the quartet of title-chasers could be about to plummet if they can win a second crucial London derby on their travels in succession.
Should Arsene Wenger’s side repeat their White Hart Lane heroics and defeat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, then they’ll have closed the gap to a single point with a game more to play.
Ifs and buts they may be at this juncture, however, with Champions League football virtually guaranteed for yet another season next term, more signings of Mesut Ozil’s status can potentially be attracted.
And with the Emirates Stadium all paid off thanks to those excessively-priced sausage rolls, Wenger will not be short of a bob or two to spend either.
