Euro 2020 player of the tournament odds and preview

Raheem Sterling’s performance in the semi-final against Denmark means he has been cut from 4/1 favourite to 13/8 in the Euro 2020 player of the tournament odds.

The England attacker won the penalty which effectively helped England secure a place in the final where they will meet Italy at Wembley on Sunday night.

Harry Kane is his nearest rival, but the England skipper is also in the running to win the Golden Boot at 7/2 in the Euro 2020 top scorer odds.

Raheem Sterling

Sterling has been at the heart of England’s best attacks throughout the course of the tournament during which he has weighed in with three goals.

The Manchester City winger was UEFA’s man of the match against Croatia and he started and finished the move which broke the deadlock against Germany.

Sterling also set up Kane’s opening goal in the 4-0 win against Ukraine and was unlucky not to win the man-of-the-match award against the Danes after another attack-minded display helped England into their first major final in 55 years.

The 26-year-old forward should have scored an equaliser only to be denied by a superb save from Kasper Schmeichel and he would have had an easy tap-in had Denmark skipper Simon Kjaer not diverted Bukayo Saka’s cross into his own net.

Another solid display against Italy could see him become the first English player to win the award, although he is still in the mix to win the Golden Boot at 18/1.

Harry Kane

Kane was 9/1 before the Denmark game but his match-winning goal and back-to-back man-of-the-match performances have seen his Euro 2020 player of the tournament odds slashed to 4/1.

The skipper took responsibility to fire England into the final by taking a penalty in extra time and although his poorly-struck effort was saved by Schmeichel, he gobbled up the rebound to spark mass hysteria in the stadium and throughout the country.

Kane had a couple of other chances before he struck the winner and he was also a creative force, providing the cross for Sterling which was brilliantly stopped by Schmeichel.

Federico Chiesa

Chiesa was on the bench for Italy’s first two group games but got his chance against Wales and that performance earned him a place in the starting line-up in the last-16 tie clash with Austria during which he opened the scoring.

Since then the Fiorentina striker has been an ever present and broke the deadlock with a wonderful finish against Spain which has seen his Euro 2020 player of the tournament odds cut to 9/1.

Giorgio Chiellini

Chiellini is likely to announce his international retirement after the Euros and Roberto Mancini will be looking to the 36-year-old centre-back to keep England at bay in the final.

The Italians have conceded just three goals at the tournament, all of which have come during the knockout stage, and they will look to keep it tight at the back once again when they face the Three Lions at Wembley.

The rugged Juventus defender missed the 2-1 win against Austria with an injury he picked up against Switzerland, but has played in the last two games and if he helps keep another clean sheet odds of 9/1 could prove interesting.
