Having showed superb organisation and defensive ability in the Capital One Cup semi-final first leg with Tottenham, Sheffield United enhanced their reputation as formidable cup opponents despite their Football League status.
With 90 minutes and a win all that separates the Blades from Wembley, that notoriety is only set to skyrocket when the Lilywhites visit Bramall Lane, as our best three bets for the game explains:
The last time Spurs lost a League Cup game against a lower league team it just happened to be in the second leg of the competition’s semi-final, away at Burnley in 2009.
That’s not the end of the worrying omens for Mauricio Pochettino’s men either, as the club have suffered defeat in three of their League Cup semi-final second legs when occupying the visitors’ changing room and have lost three of their last five trips to Bramall Lane.
The Blades, on the other hand, have won five of their last six League Cup matches at home to higher-division opponents.
This bet is recommended on the basis that Spurs have failed to keep a clean sheet in all of their last 11 away games in all competitions, while Nigel Clough’s side have managed to find the net in each of their last six Capital One Cup matches at home.
Although we predict goals for both sides, we don’t expect many of them.
The hosts will have to peek out of their shells far more than they did at White Hart Lane, but may only manage one strike against the Premier League outfit, like they’ve managed in the two other ties they’ve played against top-flighters this term.
As Spurs showed in the first leg, giving Roberto Soldado or Emmanuel Adebayor a run out seriously stems their flow too.
