Barrow v Aston Villa preview and odds

Aston Villa were League Cup finalists two seasons ago and begin their new campaign with a trip to Cumbria as we look at some possible Barrow v Aston Villa betting tips.

Villa also reached the fourth round last season so manager Dean Smith will be looking to get through despite presumably rotating his squad against League Two opposition.

Barrow have had some mixed results so far but will look to raise their game and cause an upset in front of a sell-out crowd at Holker Street.

Match Odds

Barrow are facing Villa for the first time in their history and are 13/2 to produce a shock by winning in 90 minutes.

They beat League Two rivals Scunthorpe 1-0 in the first round thanks to a goal from Dimitri Sea early in the second half.

In the league they are also unbeaten at home, picking up four points with a 3-2 win against Hartlepool and 0-0 draw with Exeter, but they have been beaten by a one-goal margin at Stevenage and Harrogate.

Barrow almost caused an upset in the Carabao Cup last season when they held out for a goalless draw at Derby but were beaten 3-2 on penalties.

Another low-scoring match looks their best hope and under 2.5 goals is available at 6/5 while a draw after 90 minutes can be added to Barrow v Aston Villa betting tips at 7/2.

Villa got past EFL opposition in Burton (3-1) and Bristol City (3-0) in this competition last season but were then beaten 1-0 at home by Stoke.

A Villa win and over 2.5 goals is an option at evens while the visitors are 23/10 to win both halves.

Talking Tactics

Smith will presumably rotate his squad but it should be noted he put a strong team out at Burton at this stage last season in the first round, with the likes of Jack Grealish, Tyrone Mings and Ollie Watkins all starting.

Danny Ings has scored two of Villa’s four goals but is expected to be on the bench at best.

Goalscorer Odds

Ings is the 14/5 favourite to open the scoring but better value may be found elsewhere.

Wesley is expected to lead the line after being introduced as a late substitute in Saturday’s 2-0 win against Newcastle and is 10/3 to break the deadlock.

Anwar El Ghazi showed on Saturday he remains Villa’s first-choice penalty taker and is 6/4 to add to his tally or 4/1 to score first.

Sea was left out of Barrow’s team at the weekend as he recovers from concussion so Offrande Zanzala looks their biggest goal threat.

He already has two goals this season, both of which were the first of the match, and he is 17/2 to do so again in Barrow v Aston Villa betting tips.
