Neil Warnock is the early favourite to replace Simon Grayson as the boss of Leeds United.

Grayson was sacked on Wednesday afternoon despite taking Leeds to promotion from League One in 2010, guiding them to safety last term and putting them to within three points off the play-offs this season.

Speaking to the Leeds United official website, Chief Executive Shaun Harvey said: “We have 18 games to go this season and are still within touching distance of the play-offs but felt with the transfer window now closed we needed to make the change at this time in the belief that a new managerial team will be able to get more out of the existing squad of players and make the difference.”

There have been rumours circulating for the past few weeks that Grayson could be on his way out and those words from Harvey seem to point to the appointment of one man – Warnock.

Warnock has consistently shown his ability at Championship level and last season guided Queens Park Rangers to the second tier title before being turfed out unceremoniously in January.

The former Sheffield United boss is now 6/4 to be the next Leeds manager and it’s hard to see anyone else taking over the reins.

Warnock will take charge of a Leeds team who – despite their 4-1 thrashing against Birmingham City on Tuesday – are in a pretty decent position and are more than capable of making a push for the play-offs.

This looks like the perfect job for Warnock to get back into management and a punt on him could be well worth considering.

If like your odds a little longer though, then Brighton boss Gus Poyet is 9/2, while former Leeds midfielder Gordon Strachan is out at 5/1 to take charge.
