Cardiff could face losing four of their players, including Championship top scorer Jay Bothroyd, on free transfers at the end of the season if they do not manage to agree new deals with them before January.

Bothroyd is the biggest name on the list thanks to his 11 Championship goals in the opening 16 games of the campaign, which has helped Cardiff sit second in the table, one point below QPR.

Adam Matthews, Chris Burke and Gavin Rae are the other three players nearing the end of the current deals and have played some role in Cardiff’s strong start to gain promotion to the Premier League.

Cardiff are currently 7/4 to win the Championship and manager Dave Jones faces a big decision if he cannot reach a positive result with the players’ agents.

All four will be able to speak to clubs in January about moving on a free transfer at the end of the season, with Bothroyd in particular a target of a number of Premier League clubs.

Cardiff will be keen to get some money for their biggest talents, especially as key midfielder Joe Ledley left on a free in the summer.

But Jones will know the importance of Bothroyd if Cardiff are to reach the Premier League and may think that bigger gains can be made by keeping him until the end of the season, rather than selling him for a cut-price fee and then ending up not getting promoted.

The club have managed to persuade the likes of Peter Whittingham and Kevin McNaughton that the future is bright at Cardiff, as they are among the players to have penned new deals relatively recently.

Cardiff travel to Scunthorpe next in the league and are 1/1 in the Championship betting market to secure the three points, with the home side 11/4 to witness success.

The Bluebirds have failed to win their away fixture with Scunthorpe in the last two Championship seasons. See the whole Scunthorpe vs Cardiff match betting odds market.
