Arsenal’s defeat to Borussia Dortmund has seen them shift from being in control of Group F to being in real danger of failing to advance beyond the group stages for the first time since the 1999/2000 season.
The result means that Dortmund, Arsenal and Napoli are all battling for supremacy on six points at the midway point of the group stages and it could be significant that the Gunners are the only one of the trio to have played twice at home already.
Furthermore, their sole remaining home game is against group also-rans Marseille, which suggests that 4/6 is not a price to be getting overly excited about on Arsenal reaching the knockout rounds.
This is in comparison to Napoli at 4/5 to qualify and it is their clash with Arsene Wenger’s men in Naples that is ultimately likely to decide the group.
As for Dortmund, their hardest work appears to be done.
Alongside leading the group, Dortmund have the luxury of hosting both Arsenal and Napoli in the coming weeks and victories in these two games should see them advance as group winners.
Ladbrokes are offering the industry best price at present of 3/4 that Dortmund finish top of Group F and they have triumphed in all seven fixtures at Westfalenstadion in all competitions so far this season.
Meanwhile, they also won all six home games in the Champions League last year en route to the final.
If any more reasoning was needed, Dortmund’s away trip to Marseille is their final outing in Group F and there is every possibility that the French club will have rubber-stamped bottom spot by then, so will have little to play for.
Punters preferring to play it safer can profit from the 1/6 that Dortmund simply qualify for the knockout rounds.
