Champions League winner odds: Blues 8/1 for successful defence

Champions League winner odds and preview

Qualifying is already under way for this season’s Champions League but which teams will be challenging for the European crown in May?

Chelsea won the title for the second time in 10 years with a 1-0 victory against Manchester City and they are priced at 8/1 in the Champions League winner odds for a successful defence.

As expected, the European juggernauts top the market ahead of the group stage which starts in September so let’s take a look at the main contenders this season.

Manchester City

City coasted to the Premier League title for the third time in four years but the Champions League eluded them once again as they lost to the Blues in the final in Porto.

Kevin de Bruyne, Manchester City, NGolo Kante, Chelsea

There will be no Sergio Aguero at the Etihad this season but Tottenham striker Harry Kane has been strongly linked with a move to City which would seriously boost their chances of getting their hands on the trophy their owners crave.

Manager Pep Guardiola’s side are going to be one of the major players in the competition and are 3/1 in the Champions League winner odds.

Bayern Munich

Another new era dawns at the Allianz Arena where Julian Nagelsmann has replaced Hansi Flick as Bayern head coach but expectations will be high for another deep run in the Champions League.

Bayern are seeking a 10th successive Bundesliga title and have reached at least the quarter-finals in nine of the last 10 seasons, so they will be challenging at 5/1 in the Champions League winner odds despite rumours linking Robert Lewandowski with a move to Real Madrid.

The Blues improved significantly under Thomas Tuchel last season although they still lack a world-class striker to take advantage of the chances they create.

Chelsea beat Manchester City three times last term and their strong squad should be good enough to go on another deep run in Europe’s elite competition.

An injury-plagued season in defence meant Liverpool only secured a place in the top four of the Premier League on the final day of the season but with Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Joel Matip and Trent Alexander-Arnold all closing on comebacks they should be in the mix once again.

The Merseysiders were knocked out by Real Madrid in the quarter-finals last season and can be backed at 8/1 in the Champions League winner odds to repeat their 2018-19 success.

Paris St Germain

PSG lost to Bayern Munich in the 2020 final and seven months later they came up short in the last four against Manchester City so we go 8/1 on the French side finally winning the Champions League.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side were pipped to the Ligue 1 title by Lille last season but with Achraf Hakimi, Sergio Ramos and Georginio Wijnaldum added to an already strong squad, and Euro 2020 player of the tournament Gianluigi Donnarumma set to follow, it promises to be an exciting campaign in Paris.

Best of the rest

Barcelona are still reportedly negotiating with free agent Lionel Messi about a new deal and they are 12/1 in the Champions League winner odds, the same price as Manchester United who are close to signing Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund.

Real Madrid, like Barca, were seriously affected by the pandemic and their financial problems mean they are 16/1 for a record-stretching 14th European title while Juventus, Spanish champions Atletico Madrid, Dortmund and Inter are 20/1, 25/1, 33/1 and 33/1 respectively.
