Canada v Great Britain betting tips and preview

Olympic gold medal hopefuls Great Britain and Canada fight it out for top spot in the final Group E game in Kashima on Tuesday morning.

Britain have already qualified for the quarter-finals but Team GB, 9/2 to win the gold medal behind 11/10 favourites USA, just need to avoid defeat to go through as group winners having won their first two games.

Hege Riise’s side are available at 19/20 to make it a perfect three so let’s examine the markets and odds in our Canada v Great Britain betting tips.

Match Odds

Ellen White has been the star of the show for Great Britain, scoring all three goals during the group stage wins against Chile (2-0) and hosts Japan (1-0).

However, former Norway and USA head coach Riise has hinted she will make full use of her squad when they face the Canadians, who have four points from their two games.

After the win against Japan, she said: “In the first half, we didn’t look like ourselves, we didn’t have the speed of play we wanted.

“We came out as a different team with an attitude and togetherness and we all committed to the last 45 minutes. In the second half we changed formation a little bit and controlled it much better.

“We are all happy, it puts us in a good position and we’re able to rest players and recover well. The connections between the players will get better and better each game.”

Great Britain, who feature in the Olympics women’s football odds, to win to nil for a third game is 2/1 or another victory by under 3.5 goals is 29/20.

But with changes afoot, it may pay dividends to look at Canada, who are 9/4 to get a draw or 3/1 to win.

Canada were unlucky not to beat Japan in their opener in which Mana Iwabuchi caught out substitute goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan from outside the area.

Nineteen members of Britain’s 22-woman squad are from England, whose individual errors led to a 2-0 defeat by Canada in an international friendly in April.

Canada are 4/5 in the double chance market to win or draw and can be backed at bigger odds of 7/4 in the same market with the addition of Team GB failing to score in the first half and under 3.5 goals in the match.

The equivalent #GetAPrice market for Team GB is available at 10/11 in the Canada v Great Britain betting tips.

Riise’s side have scored in the second half in both of their matches and they are available at 9/2 to win or draw, both teams to score after the break and over 2.5 match goals.

Talking Tactics

Riise went with a more defence-minded midfield for the win against Japan in which Wales’ Sophie Ingle partnered Keira Walsh in a 4-5-1 formation, with White leading the line.

However, Ingle was substituted midway through the second half and the system changed to a 4-3-3 which helped shift the momentum towards Team GB.

Goals either side of half-time from Manchester City’s Janine Beckie helped Canada seal a 2-1 win against Chile in Sapporo where Sheridan started in place of injured keeper Stephanie Labbe.
