A washout in the cricket on Friday led to a mini-blow for the Safety Net after the game was declared a non-result.
With Hampshire sitting comfortably on 116-2 after just 13 overs, we were confident of witnessing another £20 being added to the Safety Net bank before the rain ruined proceedings.
We didn’t manage to hit our £20 target for the day but then we didn’t lose anything either and so the Safety Net bank remains at £321.50.
Today there are a number of markets to pick from and with the football pre-season in full swing, the friendlies involving Sporting Lisbon, Sheffield United and Leicester City are tempting but we are turning our focus to darts.
The World Matchplay got underway in Blackpool on Saturday and of the eight matches we’ve witnessed so far, there has only been one shock upset.
Tonight sees Phil Taylor, Wes Newton, Mervyn King and Wayne Jones all in action and while we’re focusing on Newton’s match with Andy Smith, there is a tempting 85/40 accumulator to be found by backing the favourites to win.
However the Safety Net is focusing on Newton’s match with Smith in order to secure the £20 target for today.
World number 11 Newton was unfortunate to miss out on the UK Open title last month, being pipped at the post by James Wade, but the man from Blackpool has three final appearances to his name this year and will be spurred on by the home crowd.
An early exit in Holland in his last tournament is the reason Newton is just 1/2 to beat Smith, but while Smith can boast a final appearance from that tournament, Newton should have too much for the world number 21 tonight.
At 1/2 to win we’re staking £40 on Newton winning tonight in order to return £20.
Today’s stake: £40
Best case scenario: £341.50
Worst case scenario: £281.50
Last Safety Net bet: Hampshire to beat Middlesex @ 1/3 – no result
Wealth warning: although we are confident the safety net bet’s strategy will be profitable over a period of time, the nature of sport means we cannot guarantee you will win every single time.
